| So I guess there's a bit of time now for a quick update on a few highlights over the last couple of weeks The *Trio Blitz* team (Yulietta Chondro, Elaine Cheng, Gladys Yeung) competed along with 2 other teams, La Resistance and Grilled Bananas in the ~1st Annual UBC Food Society "Iron Chef" Competition~ on Wednesday March 14th, 2007 at the Dubrulle School of Culinary Arts! It wasn't REALLY an Iron Chef competition though because...well...a lot of the rules and format have been modified hahaha...eg: no secret theme ingredient, extended time frames, etc...so it really was a Cook Off more than Iron Chef. Lots of fun nonetheless We all prepared delicious 3 course meals tasted and critqued by the audience (fellow Food Society members) and 2 judges (a student-chef from Dubrulle and a nutrition prof from UBC...whom I had class with the next morning hahaha) Here's what we made: Appetizer: Mango and Avocado Crab Salad
Entree: Panko and Multigrain Crusted Butter-Herbed Stuffed Chicken Breast served with Parmesan Gnocchi and Asparagus
Dessert: Puff Pastry Sandwiches with 3 types of Custard Sauces - Macha, Vanilla, Chocolate
And the WINNERS were ...*drum roll*...!! ...*Trio Blitz*!! ...after something like...17 hours of preparation...
We each won a $50 Gift Certificate to Infinity Dining Experience! Definitely a pat on the back for everyone who competed I know we already kind of celebrated at Joey's afterwards, but I still think we should have a potluck so we can try out the other team's dishes!! Saturday, March 17, 2007 I signed up to play mixed doubles with Maurice in CSA's Superliscious Spring Smash Off!! I was sooo looking forward to it cuz I was SO PUMPED! <-- Gladys' Game Face hehe... ...but then, I realized that the soreness that I've been having in my lower back for about a month now was probably a sprain back according to Ritchie (Thanks for making it feel better and teaching me how to make it better at home too ) I don't know why I didn't feel any pain while I was playing over the last couples of weeks, but I definitely felt it after our first game ...which we won ...but then, I definitely couldn't even hit nor move properly for our second game...so we lost...bugged me that I knew we could've won... So, I've decided to put off any strenuous back requiring activities (eg: weekly badminton and bowling ) at least for 3 weeks or so? Thank you for everyone's kind regards and concern ...but I think I am getting better...and I've booked an appointment with UBC Student Health for next week. Apparently, they've got a very good sports injuries dude there so... Anyways, on a brighter note, CONGRATULATIONS to Ritchie & Maurice for winning ~*Runner Up*~ positions for Men's Doubles!!! AND...thanks to Jackee for bringing/cooking up those delicious egg tarts and fried rice!! Possibly more updates to come later but, in the meantime, it's time for me to head out for some yummy ramen at Kintaro to Gyoza King and Cheesecake Etc with Jess & Pegs!! ...hmm....we're missing SOMEONE though....*cough OLI cough*
| hmmm....can't believe it's already March...only 2 more months ish until grad....!! It's definitely been a very busy couple of weeks .....very much like riding on a rollercoaster...high speed...with lots of ups and downs..... mmhmm....a whole wave of emotions... In fact, it was more like...for every "good" thing that has happened to me in the last couple of weeks, something "bad" comes along with it.... ...leaving me feeling so exhausted, so confused, a little worried, a little grumpy at times, and just.....UGH..... I'm really hoping everything will turn out for the better/best....as I always hope they do....but lately, I can't even tell if I'm being overly optimistic/pessimistic/concerned...am I thinking too much? ...or not enough? I don't know. I'm not even totally sure about what I want/don't want sometimes....I mean....I thought I did and I kind of still think I do? ...sigh...maybe I'm just tired....saying/doing/thinking/feeling the wrong things at the wrong times? ...is that even possible? aiya...I guess I just gotta hope for the best and maybe try to focus on one "problem" at a time (if that's possible )? ...instead of having multiple "problems" overwhelme me... Anyhow, ON A BRIGHTER NOTE, I think I'm just going to post up all the "good" things that have happened recently... - Over the reading "break", I participated in a Community Service Learning project for my FNH 473 course
Even though, the days I spent on this project were longer than my regular school days, I would have to say that, in the end, it was quite a worthwhile project I was fortunate enough to have worked with such an awesome group. And with our amazingly cooperative efforts, we managed to finish a fairly artistic report which provided the YWCA with rooftop garden suggestions/guidelines/recommendations that will be used in the near future Maybe it was because we knew that the product(s) of this project would actually contribute to resolving "real" problems that made it all the more fulfilling And even though we were all sooooo tired, we still had lots of fun and a pretty neat learning experience One thing that struck us all was how in sync our thoughts were during the last 2 days hahaha....seriously....perhaps, like one of them said, it may have been because we were spending so much time together in the meditation room that even our "thought waves" aligned lol.... Another highlight of this project was the self-guided walking tour of the Downtown Eastside. NEVER would I have thought that I would EVER WALK in the core of the DTES and into the public library on Main and Hastings (which btw, has a spiral staircase leaning inwards) Definitely a little scary....but a learning experience nonetheless - After the CSL project, I was informed that my project leader recommended me to represent our group in answering some questions about CSL for Maclean's Magazine!
Apparently, she thought I was reflective and stuff hehehe. Unfortunately, I don't remember everything she said about me because I was so surprised! ..and my short-term memory...well....hahaha It's really not that big of a deal considering there are several other groups out there doing CSL, as well. And with one person selected from each group....my comments may not even be published BUT, it definitely made me feel pretty darn good hehehehe... - I went to my first baby shower! Congratulations Herminia!!
...and being the food-lover that I am, I bought her little baby a shirt thing from Babytease that said "Give peas a chance. " hehehe... The shower was pretty neat. There were so many interesting gifts! All were very useful and thoughtful. And having different generations of people there talking about babies and all things that could potentially relate to them.....wow.... hahaha - I got to vent more than I usually do lol....not that I was breaking down and neeeded to....those topics just came up naturally and I was able to vent stuff out to a few people who were sharing similar problems hahahaha....that felt pretty good too hehe...
- Finished my last undergrad midterm
- Ordered a soon-to-be-mine NANOSPEED 8000!
  - And lastly (there were probably more things, but I just don't remember right now and I wanna go to sleep
), but certainly not the least, was simply spending time with friends It's always good times

| I know I'm suppose to be studying right now, but I've decided to take a break to say a few things First of all, people need to learn to move to the back of the bus! I mean...seriously...it's not that hard And when there's that split level on a bus, the back would be all the way to the back ie up the steps! It's fine if you're getting off soon to stand near the doors and it's also fine if the bus isn't full and people aren't waiting to get on, but when those situations do not apply, I don't understand why it seems to be so hard for people to move to the back of the bus so that other people can get on! It's even suckier on some days when people have to wait in the rain/snow/other types of precipitation, in the cold weather OR when they really need to get to places at certain times but can't get on the bus because SOME people don't know how or are not courteous enough to move to the back of the bus! It's great that the bus drivers remind passengers to move to the back, but they shouldn't have to do it at EVERY stop ...because people SHOULD be able to pick that up by like the third reminder! Secondly...something I don't even know if it could be changed or should be changed...well that's not totally true because I personally think it should be changed It's kind of a matter of personal preferences and habits though I guess. Anyways, in my opinion, covering up the smell of cigarettes with excessive cologne/perfume.....is still unpleasant....particularly uncomfortable in smaller, more confined spaces...I really don't know which is better/worse though: the smell of cigarettes alone or that with excessive cologne/perfume... There's also a third thing too...an annoyance if you may....and the root of many problems...it's got to do with...people...and their character...and their attitude... I know that's super vague, but I figure I should wrap up here since I've really gotta get back to my studying | | |
| So, from a food, nutrition, and health perspective.....I've got exciting news!! As of Monday, February 5, 2007 8:00am (Pacific Time), Health Canada has finally released the ~*new and improved*~ CANADA'S FOOD GUIDE! I can't seem to find an image file for it yet, so check out the pdf file for it! http://26489.vws.magma.ca/view_eatwell_vue_bienmang_e.pdf And if you want to learn more... Check out: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/index_e.html Apparently, you can even create a your own *personalized food guide* tailored to your diet! I, unfortunately, haven't had the opportunity to try it out myself since this new tool is so popular that I can't even get to the site. SO if you're lucky enough to get through, go try it out and let me know how it goes! A few improvements of this new food guide compared with the old one: - Veggies (the green part of the rainbow) now comes before the Grains (yellow) indicating people should consume more fruits and vegetables! Yum...
- It's MUCH more comprehensive! It teaches you HOW to read those Nutrition Labels and HOW to count serving sizes etc
- It's also more age and sex specifc!
So what are you waiting for? Go check it out!!! You can even order FREE copies!!!
